Polaroids

I've been taking Polaroids for about a year now but I don't think I've featured them on the blog before.

With the shots that I took around Downtown LA yesterday I achieved my best results yet, even though it was my first time shooting with my 'new' box-type Polaroid 600 camera.

I attribute these good results to the steadily increasing quality of the Impossible Project film I have been using, and the fact that I fitted an accessory called the Impossible Frog Tongue to my camera, ensuring that the images were properly shielded from light as they were ejected. One thing I'd like to do is work more human subjects into my photography. That said I'm really satisfied; just check out these gorgeously dreamy shots!

String of Paper Cranes

Months ago I folded hundreds of paper cranes for a fundraiser related to the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, but for various complicated reasons I was never able to submit them to the charity that had organized the event. So until last week they were sitting in bags in my room just taking up space, because I couldn't bring myself to just get rid of them.

Finally last week I posted an ad for the cranes on the free section of craigslist, and got almost 50 emails in under an hour! I guess free paper cranes are in demand? Since I could choose who got the cranes they ended up going to a very nice older gentleman whose friend was doing a theater piece at USC about the tsunami, so I'm happy they will be used. I'm invited, and I'll post pictures if I end up going. I held onto one crane of each color though, and today finished my mini-rainbow-senbazuru of 13 cranes.

The bottom stopper is a Danish Krone given to me by a friend from Denmark, and there is a glass bead separating each crane.

CicLAvia October 2011

Went to my first CicLAvia today, and what a beautiful day it was! If you haven't heard of it, CicLAvia is an event that shuts down selected roads in LA to car traffic for a few hours on a Sunday. It's happened twice before here in LA but as I was in school this was the first I was able to make. And it's a wonderful concept. What a thrill it is just to ride unencumbered on car-free streets! Although there was enough bike traffic in places to cause bike traffic jams. Events like these make me very optimistic about changing attitudes in LA not only among the urbanist and planning community, but for the general public as well. Just look at all these people enjoying themselves!

These pictures are the reward for my burning leg muscles and sore ass. Dear god I've got to ride my bike more often.
