CicLAvia October 2011

Went to my first CicLAvia today, and what a beautiful day it was! If you haven't heard of it, CicLAvia is an event that shuts down selected roads in LA to car traffic for a few hours on a Sunday. It's happened twice before here in LA but as I was in school this was the first I was able to make. And it's a wonderful concept. What a thrill it is just to ride unencumbered on car-free streets! Although there was enough bike traffic in places to cause bike traffic jams. Events like these make me very optimistic about changing attitudes in LA not only among the urbanist and planning community, but for the general public as well. Just look at all these people enjoying themselves!

These pictures are the reward for my burning leg muscles and sore ass. Dear god I've got to ride my bike more often.

Well, if you're trying to get by completely without a car then you'll have to stick to living Downtown, in Little Tokyo, or the Arts District. Unfortunately the public transit system in LA (which I ride all the time and love) doesn't go enough places with the frequency it needs to make it really practical. And I know plenty of people who live here without a car and they have great lives, but that said it's still LA and eventually you'll need to go to Santa Monica or LAX in the middle of the night. Just some things to think about.
